For families in Boise

For families in Boise, Treasure Valley & Magic Valley: use the resources and practical steps in this guide to plan wanted nonmedical help. Confirm individual requirements and current availability with the responsible provider.

A Boise State academic assistant and a personal-care helper serve different roles. A student who needs both should discuss academic participation with the Educational Access Center while arranging ordinary daily help separately.

Clarify the approved course role

With the student directing the conversation, describe the academic assistance needed to the EAC Access Coordinator. Ask how the actual assistant role is approved, recruited, activated and supervised. The university's responsibilities document places academic-assistant employment with EAC and excludes daily-living assistance.

Do not assume a family member becomes the academic employee or that an assigned assistant can add personal care between classes. Ask about the actual permitted tasks and how an unresolved course-support need will be addressed.

Build the personal-help arrangement around student life

Ask the student what ordinary assistance they want before, between and after classes. Confirm actual willing helpers, provider tasks and access conditions. If campus housing is proposed, distinguish an approved accommodation from an assigned suitable room and an accepted helper-access arrangement.

A housing approval, family presence or academic appointment does not establish ready personal care. Keep clinical questions with qualified professionals and the student's privacy and choices central. Review both arrangements when class schedules or living plans change so that a gap in one is not silently assigned to the other.

Resources for this decision

For a separate discussion of wanted nonmedical assistance, contact the Boise care team or Get Started. Describe the actual location, tasks and timing, and ask the team to confirm what it can provide before relying on a visit.
