FMCTA Dial-a-Ride and Caregiver Help: Who Does What?

For families in Fairmont
For families in Fairmont, North Central West Virginia & Southwestern Pennsylvania: use the resources and practical steps in this guide to plan wanted nonmedical help. Confirm individual requirements and current availability with the responsible provider.
An FMCTA Dial-a-Ride reservation covers a transportation arrangement. A Fairmont family may still need someone to help the rider get ready, reach the curb, manage belongings and settle in afterward. Assign those responsibilities before the travel day so the driver does not arrive while everyone is still deciding who will help.
Use FMCTA's actual assistance limits
FMCTA's Dial-a-Ride guide describes curb-to-curb travel. It says drivers deploy vehicle lifts or ramps and secure wheelchairs, but do not dress riders, carry packages, clear icy paths or take wheelchairs over unsuitable steps or ramps. The booking process asks about mobility devices and accompanying people, and distinguishes attendants from companions.
Call 304-366-8177 with the actual trip and assistance needs. Ask which rider application or approval applies, whether the mobility device can be accommodated, how the accompanying person is classified and what fares are due. Confirm the Dial-a-Ride schedule directly; general website service hours may describe other FMCTA services.
Give each part of the trip an owner
Make a journey list with the rider, not just a pickup time:
| Stage | Responsibility to settle |
|---|---|
| Before the vehicle arrives | Dressing, belongings, fare and reaching a suitable pickup point. |
| Boarding and travel | Provider-confirmed device arrangements and any attendant traveling with the rider. |
| At the destination | Entry, check-in, waiting and personal assistance. |
| Returning home | Entering the house, carrying belongings inside and the next meal or routine. |
If the person needs help during an appointment, explain that to the accompanying relative or caregiver. Someone meeting the vehicle at the destination will not cover needs during the journey. A driver cannot fill an unassigned care role.
Prepare for a changed return
Ask dispatch for the actual pickup window and instructions if the appointment runs late. Write down the number to call and give it to the person who will be present. FMCTA directs riders to contact the office about a delay; drivers cannot make scheduling changes for them.
Keep bags within an amount the rider or companion can manage. Arrange safe curb access in advance, especially if snow or ice could block the path. If the planned help or access will not work, contact the provider before relying on the ride.
For household preparation, accompaniment or help after the outing, start with our Fairmont care page. Give the regional care team the transportation window, destination and exact tasks. Confirm any available caregiver visit independently of the FMCTA booking.
