For families in Morgantown

For families in Morgantown, North Central West Virginia & Southwestern Pennsylvania: use the resources and practical steps in this guide to plan wanted nonmedical help. Confirm individual requirements and current availability with the responsible provider.

An existing WV ADW Personal Options member may want help with employer paperwork without giving up control of the arrangement. The program-representative role needs to be understood separately from paid attendant work and permission merely to discuss information.

Start with member choice and the resource consultant

The ADW manual retains the member as common-law employer while a program representative assists. The representative role is unpaid, requires someone at least 18 and cannot be combined with being that member's paid Personal Options employee.

Ask the assigned resource consultant to explain the current appointment process and training. The member should know what help is proposed, and the prospective representative should understand the duties before accepting. A family relationship alone does not establish this role.

Clarify the document before signing

Use the current program forms route with the consultant. Different forms can describe different powers. The third-party designation concerns defined disclosure and contact permission; it does not appoint someone to perform employer duties. Do not choose a form based only on a familiar title or equate a surrogate-employer label with the manual's program-representative role.

Keep ordinary care work, paperwork assistance and legal or medical authority separate. Appointment to this program role does not itself create power of attorney, determine capacity or transfer employer status.

If the representative needs to step back, tell the resource consultant early. Ask how the member can arrange appropriate replacement support and what happens to any required role while that is resolved. Do not assume either that care ends automatically or that an unappointed relative can take over paperwork.

Discuss ordinary help at home

For separately arranged nonmedical assistance, our Morgantown care team can discuss the person's requested tasks and timing. Contact the local care team to ask about the actual scope, schedule and available staffing.
