For families in Mentor

For families in Mentor, Northeast Ohio: use the resources and practical steps in this guide to plan wanted nonmedical help. Confirm individual requirements and current availability with the responsible provider.

A homebound Mentor reader can have preferences that go well beyond "bring something to read." Favorite subjects, disliked genres and preferred formats can help a library select material the person wants.

Mentor Public Library's Words on Wheels service describes monthly delivery for temporarily or permanently homebound Mentor residents. Staff use the reader's interests to choose material, and new patrons complete a Reading Survey. The service also has a specific agreement about librarians managing the participating patron's library account.

Start with the reader's choices

Ask what the person would like more of and what they would rather avoid. Discuss print or audiovisual formats without assuming that age determines preference. A family member can help write the answers while leaving the choices with the reader.

Use the current survey linked by the service page. If completing it is difficult, ask library staff what assistance they can offer. Keep a copy of the preferences the person agreed to share so later feedback can be specific: which selection they enjoyed, which format worked and what they want next time.

Understand the account arrangement

The program's published guidelines say librarians manage holds, check-ins, checkouts and renewals for participating patrons. Discuss that arrangement with the reader before enrolling. Ask staff how a family helper should communicate changes or questions.

Do not establish a second, competing system of holds on the person's behalf without discussing it with the library. Likewise, library participation does not automatically authorize a caregiver to use the person's credentials or make unrelated account decisions.

Confirm the actual delivery process

The service page describes delivery to individual residences and group homes. Ask about address coverage, the next available delivery, what happens with returned material and how to communicate an access change. A monthly service description is not a confirmed appointment for this household.

For details, use the current contact on the library page: 255-8811, extension 247. If instructions on an older form differ, ask library staff which to use. Keep borrowed material and return instructions together; ask about the library's loan and lost-item responsibilities.

Keep companionship as a separate choice

Delivery provides material, while reading aloud together or discussing a story may require a person to spend time at home. If the household wants nonmedical companionship, explore the Mentor care page and contact the Northeast Ohio team. Explain the reader's preferences and ask what can fit an agreed visit and current availability.
