For families in Akron

For families in Akron, Northeast Ohio: use the resources and practical steps in this guide to plan wanted nonmedical help. Confirm individual requirements and current availability with the responsible provider.

A METRO SCAT reservation and personal help at home cover different parts of an Akron journey. Plan both before relying on the trip.

METRO's SCAT policies describe age 62 or older as one potential eligibility route and a review process for some younger people whose disability prevents fixed-route use. Ask METRO which application and service apply to the rider's situation. Age or an application alone does not establish a booked journey.

Give METRO the relevant trip information

Contact METRO Customer Care at 330-762-0341. Ask about eligibility, the actual pickup and destination, the requested day and any relevant mobility equipment.

If a companion will travel, disclose that when requesting the trip and confirm the applicable arrangement. Do not assume another traveler has been added because the primary rider's request has been made.

SCAT and METRO ADA are separate services on the provider's website. Let METRO explain the correct route rather than applying an ADA rule found elsewhere to a SCAT trip.

Plan the assistance drivers do not provide

The SCAT policy says operators do not enter the residence. It also ties assistance to safe access between the door and vehicle, including clear walkways and suitable steps or ramps.

That leaves practical questions for the household:

Before pickupAfter returning
Who helps the person get ready?Who can meet the person if assistance is needed?
Can the person reach the agreed pickup point with the help available? How will entry to the home work?
Who addresses snow, ice or another access problem?Who helps the person settle into the next routine?

Do not expect the driver to replace the personal help needed inside the home or to resolve an unsafe path on arrival. Ask METRO about equipment review and specific assistance questions before the travel day.

Match visits to the confirmed pickup window

METRO's policy describes readiness within a pickup window. Record the actual window and instructions supplied for the reservation and plan personal assistance around them. Include the return arrangements and a contact for changes.

For additional nonmedical help, our Akron care team can review the agreed tasks. Contact Northeast Ohio and confirm available caregiver visits separately from METRO eligibility and trip reservations.
