For families in Fairmont

For families in Fairmont, North Central West Virginia & Southwestern Pennsylvania: use the resources and practical steps in this guide to plan wanted nonmedical help. Confirm individual requirements and current availability with the responsible provider.

An ADW opening for someone already receiving West Virginia Personal Care is a decision point, not an automatic instruction to cancel existing help. Ask the responsible teams to explain the actual choice and any approved combined arrangement before changing visits.

Compare the current plan with the offered route

With the member involved, list the assistance currently delivered through Personal Care and what the ADW opening would change. Ask the assigned teams to apply the current ADW and Personal Care policies to the actual situation.

Under the current ADW policy, dual services require the applicable ADW criteria, including an assessed Level D, separate Personal Care eligibility and approval, and nonduplicate services. This is not a family calculation that adds two advertised hour limits. Personal Care in this arrangement is not respite, companionship or round-the-clock monitoring. The responsible teams decide whether the individual meets the requirements.

Protect the transition between actual services

For an existing PC member offered an ADW slot who cannot receive dual services, the current ADW manual says the member chooses between the programs and PC services are to remain until ADW service begins. That written safeguard is distinct from the separate staffing-gap provisions for someone already approved for dual services; neither guarantees that a particular worker is available. Ask the existing Personal Care RN or agency and actual ADW case manager or resource consultant how the applicable route works. Confirm what event establishes the ADW start, who communicates it and what happens if staffing is delayed. An opening, an assessment and a first visit are separate steps.

If a dual arrangement is approved, ask the teams to identify each program's tasks, times and coordination responsibilities so services are not duplicated. The policy also limits a case-management agency from providing the same member's State Plan Personal Care direct services unless an applicable exception is determined; do not assume one agency may perform every role. A member should not have to resolve conflicting worker instructions alone.

Keep written confirmation of the chosen route and the actual visits. If part of the plan remains unstaffed, bring that gap back before ending help that is still needed. A program decision should result in a workable home routine, rather than a paper transfer that leaves the family guessing who arrives next.

Discuss ordinary help at home

For separately arranged nonmedical assistance, our Fairmont care team can discuss the person's requested tasks and timing. Contact the local care team to ask about the actual scope, schedule and available staffing.
